Top 10 Music

This is a sampling of my music collection, with descriptions and album covers of selected artists.
O.K. there are more than 10, but why limit any good thing to 10, or 50, or any finite number?

10,000 Maniacs

Everyone has heard of the 10,000 Maniacs, or at least Natalie Merchant. But not everyone knows how cool they were in the early years. "Hope Chest" released in 1990 is acutally comprised of songs from two earlier albums: "Human Conflict Number Five"(1982) and "Secrets of the I Ching."(1983) The reason I like these songs so much is the strong reggae influence, I can just listen to them over and over, all day long! Later the band mostly fell apart I guess because nothing I've heard from later albums can compare. "Blind Man's Zoo" is a nice album, it's just not great.
Billy Bragg & Wilco

The only work I've heard of from these guys is "Mermaid Avenue." It's a collection of songs by Woody Guthrie that he never produced (only had the lyrics for them). It's a lot of fun to listen to and I think they do a great job even if they are fascists.
Counting Crows

The Counting Crows have been one of my favorite bands since I was a dumb teenager. The band's style has changed/progressed slightly with each album. From the bare bones folk-rock of "August and Everything After" to the significantly more distorted "Recovering the Satellites" to the well balanced combination of the two in "This Desert Life". How's that for phony music review analysis?
Fredric Chopin

I love classical music, but I don't show a lot of it on my list here because you either know how great it is or you don't. Without question Chopin was one of the greatest composers for the piano of all time. A few of his close rivals in my book are, Rachmaninoff, and Schumann.
Bill Frisell

Jazz-Fusion at it's best. Purely instrumental works with so much depth and variety. Frisell is a true innovator on the guitar. Some people say all his songs sound the same? They must not be listening.
R.E.M.

How can you doubt the greatness of R.E.M.?
Rusted Root

I've been known to say that Rusted Root is my favorite band. Their jungle-style rock 'n roll is never boring or predictable. They use approximatly 375 drums and all kinds of other instruments - very skilled musicians. Mike Glabicki has an amazing voice, strong with good use of tremolo, it's like an instrument. I highly recommend their first three major release albums: "When I Woke," "Remember," and "Rusted Root." I have yet to listen to their newest production, "Welcome to My Party" but from what I've heard the band is going in a different direction now, not so good. Hopefully I can change my tune after I hear the whole album.
Stevie Ray Vaughan

One of the greatest guitarist of all time. His untimely death was truely a tragedy since he didn't kill himself with drugs, but had overcome drugs and depression prior to the accident. This is a quote from one the album notes:
"It took me quite a while to realize that the real deal is to be able to be enough of a person on your own to know when somebody loves you and cares about you." -Stevie Ray Vaughn
All of his songs are great, but I especially like his renditions of Jimi Hendrix songs, such as "Little Wing" and "Voodoo Child."
John Williams

John Williams is one of the greatest film score composers of all time. He is famous for his works in "Star Wars," and numerous other films including, "Jurassic Park," "Superman," "E.T.," "Raiders of the Lost Ark/Indiana Jones"

More to come later.
